Sustainability: Small Improvements, Big Impact

The “go green mentality” is nothing new—in fact, the sustainability movement has been underway for decades. However, more and more industries are finding a balance between the environment, economics, and ethics. As an industry leader in creative gifting, craft products, and DIY activity sets, we’re committed to applying a sustainability mindset to what we do. From the design and development process to the manufacturing and delivery of products to our customers, sustainability is thought about every step of the way. Here’s a little bit about what we’re doing, why we’re doing it, and what it means for you.

Putting Waste in the Right Place

Did you know that over 140 million tons of waste ends up in landfills in the United States each year?1

Startling, right? That’s why we’re making efforts to improve the recyclability of our materials, including incorporating environmentally-friendly corrugate and plastics and Forest Stewardship Council paper products (that’s an organization that helps prevent deforestation).

Not only are we maximizing the recycled materials in our packaging, but we’re also minimizing their physical size. Decreasing a package size by even an inch goes a long way—so you may start to see boxes that are slimmer or more tightly packed. “I’m excited to see more marked results from our initial push on optimizing packaging box sizes to further reduce materials usage and transportation imprint,” says Hiu Lee, Executive Vice President of Merchandising for Horizon Group USA.

Quality is never something we compromise, so this shift is solely intended to cut down on the amount of waste being produced, while still guaranteeing our products ship to stores (and you!) in the best condition possible.

Sustainability is all about doing less harm and more good—and even the seemingly smallest actions make an impact.

For instance, we’ve gained a Wal-Mart Giga-Guru Certification, which means that we’re a company helping to lessen the amount of greenhouse gasses from the global value chain by 2030.2 Similarly, our clean beauty initiative remains a top priority, bringing clean ingredients-based products to consumers around the world.

But that’s not all—there’s an even newer (and cooler!) technology in town, and it’s called Safe Ink. We’re excited to implement this worry-free, antimicrobial printing technology, which is essentially an additive that protects packaging against bacteria. This, along with all the other sustainability measures, will continue to play a role in the clean experience we’re all coming to expect.

For us, this way of life is now a way of business—and we’re eager for the opportunities that lay ahead.

Many of our products have undergone an eco-friendly makeover—from our STEM activity kits to DIY accessory-making sets.

Keep an eye out for key sustainability symbols & seals on our packaging! We hope this will serve as the feel-good comfort you seek when shopping, knowing that we’re working better, in a more sustainable way.

Our commitment to sustainability is at the forefront of our company mission moving forward, and we’re super excited to spread the message to our consumers. We strive to promote a culture of continuous progress in this very important initiative for our future creators.

As we continue to grow and evolve with the marketplace, we’re concentrating on doing our part to help. “The focus is on progress, not perfection,” Hiu says. “Setting achievable goals and staying abreast of what’s happening in the world around us and what consumers are craving. I’m hopeful we can continually elevate the standards around sustainability.”

We hope you’ll come along with us on this important journey!
